Every year during the CES I get the impression that flying cars are real and automated driving has already happened (and that full cockpit displays help with driver distraction, but that’s another post!).
The benefits of automated driving are enormous, but the route to autonomy is not an easy one and includes testing, a lot of testing. Below are some examples demonstrating the scale and resources that some of the leaders in the field are devoting to make automated driving a reality:
--- Toyota announced the creation of a “Living Laboratory” in Woven City to test and develop technologies such as autonomy, robotics, personal mobility, smart homes and artificial intelligence in a real-world environment.
--- Daimler is consolidating worldwide vehicle testing in one location, the Test and Technology Center in Immendingen.
--- Roborace is pushing Robocars to the limit with Season Alpha for Electric Autonomous Motorsport.
--- VW is using the Lower Saxony testing ground to improve assisted driving and for long-term development of automated driving software.
Real transformation and innovation requires systematic planning, and takes time, but it includes short-term wins and benefits.
