Sono Motors: focusing on product development by extreme complexity reduction.

November 4, 2019

Sion, the first electric vehicle with solar panels will come in one variant only. Yes, only one variant, not a single option available (not even colour!). The reason? Reducing complexity, reducing cost, reducing production time.

In addition, Sono Motors will not own a manufacturing factory, because it is a huge investment and getting it right the first time is highly unlikely, but they will collaborate with an existing factory in Sweden (NEVS).

...and I love this approach

When you are a start-up and you are developing a new product, on an extremely competitive industry, you have to say NO.

-NO to the one million features that no one will use

-NO to numerous trim levels and variations that increase complexity

-NO to acting like an established OEM and to comparing yourself with one. Ford, BMW, VW and Toyota have different resources, expertise, millions of existing customers and products.

The automotive market is extremely challenging and I don't know if Sono Motors will be successful or not, but I believe they have the right approach to maximise their chances.

P.S. perhaps they could offer colour choice!
