VW Touareg, speed lock out needed

June 18, 2019

VW Touareg, speed lock-out needed. I was extremely surprised to see an Online configuration Wizard with two paragraphs of text, while driving!

One of my favourite use cases is adding petrol/charging station along the navigation route. Infotainment systems have become so intuitive and as a result it is super easy to find a petrol station or parking along your navigation route.

However, when I was testing the VW Touareg and tried to add petrol station along route, for the first time only, I was led to an online configuration wizard. The screen that appeared was showing two big paragraphs of text (00:16 of the video) and the option to activate the account or register.

VW is leading innovation on so many aspects of automotive and I have the greatest respect for the brand, but on this case I think this is a big fail. Speed lock-out should have prevented the driver/user from going through these menus while driving.

NHTSA Guidelines recommend disabling unreasonably distracting tasks and/or devices while driving.

Many thanks to Scott Hodgins and Jon Ward at Tobii Pro.

Data collection for a personal study, views are my own.
