You drive on narrow roads with traffic, in a town you have never been before. You feel like a leaner driver again and you use all your attentional capacity to negotiate an S-bend.
Then all of a sudden you hear a notification on your mobile. Do you have the option to ignore the sound and keep focusing on the road?
Our attention is influenced by goal-driven factors (top-down). For example, I need to focus on the road to navigate safely.
However, our attention is also influenced by stimulus driven factors (bottom-up). For example, a notification sound, a sudden brightness change, a vivid colour, etc.
Driving mode that limits mobile notifications should be as important as airplane mode. The mobile in your car might not interfere with the car systems, but it interferes with your attention.
